Mandarin Oriental Expands into Malaysia with Rebranding of Luxury Resort in Desaru Coast

Mandarin Oriental is set to significantly expand its presence in Malaysia with the upcoming rebranding of an exquisite resort and private residences on Desaru Coast, Johor. This strategic move, anticipated to bring the property into the Mandarin Oriental portfolio this month and fully rebrand it as "Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast" by January 2026, marks a pivotal moment for luxury tourism in the region.

Nestled within 128 acres of lush rainforest and boasting a pristine beachfront overlooking the South China Sea, the resort offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and refined luxury. Desaru Coast itself is renowned for its unspoiled coastline, consistent warm climate, and tranquil environment, making it an ideal location for this new venture.

Laurent Kleitman, Group Chief Executive of Mandarin Oriental, highlighted the significance of this expansion, stating, "Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast represents a significant step in our strategic vision to bring the Group’s legendary service and crafted experiences, that resonate deeply with today’s luxury traveller, to new and exceptional locations." The partnership was cemented through a hotel management agreement witnessed by the Chief Minister of Johor, Dato’ Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who emphasized Johor's immense potential and the timely reintroduction of this iconic beachfront property ahead of Visit Johor Year 2026.

Designed by the late Kerry Hill, the resort stands as his final completed project, showcasing tropical modernism that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. The property features 44 spacious suites and villas, each offering direct sea or rainforest views, with many including private gardens and plunge pools. Guests will enjoy a diverse culinary experience across five dining destinations, including a stylish beach club.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental promises a holistic wellness sanctuary, complementing a yoga pavilion, fitness centre, and various sporting facilities. A thoughtfully designed Kids’ Club ensures enriching experiences for younger guests. The resort also provides elegant event spaces for weddings and gatherings, along with access to the nearby Els Club Desaru Coast, featuring two championship golf courses.

Future plans include an additional 40 branded residences, offering owners the opportunity to experience Mandarin Oriental’s renowned service in a private residential setting. Dato’ Mohamed Nasri Sallehuddin, Chairman of Destination Resorts and Hotels Sdn Bhd (DRH), the property owner, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, recognizing Mandarin Oriental as the perfect fit for Desaru Coast. Karina Ridzuan, (Interim) Group Chief Executive Officer of DRH, underscored the partnership as a "bold cultural handshake" set to establish a new global benchmark for luxury travel in Desaru Coast.

Desaru Coast is a 4,000-acre multifaceted destination in Johor, Malaysia, celebrated for its natural beauty, diverse accommodations including other globally recognized resorts, championship golf courses, Adventure Waterpark, and international connectivity via the Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal.
